I keep seeing these music challenges on social media where people post images of musicians and the songs that made an impact on them. This is not that list. These songs are pretty non - life changing for me, but catch me in the car when one of these comes on and you will swear, you don't know me.
Adore You - Harry Styles
So I know he used to be in One Direction, dated Taylor Swift and wore pearls to the Met Gala. That's pretty much all I know about Harry Styles. But this song is soulful, and sexy and just so chill. The background vocals, the guitar interlude, it's like a sweet treat for my ears. It's on repeat for sure.
Soulmate - Lizzo
I mean, who doesn't love a body positivity song? Sometimes I feel silly being 40 something and listening to a 20 something talk to me about self confidence. Like, Lizzo, where were you when I needed to hear this in high school? Oh yeah, not even born yet.
Best line: No, I'm never lonely, I know I'm a queen but I don't need no crown
Karaoke - Big Freedia (feat. Lizzo)
Another Lizzo contribution. I remember the first time I heard this song. Mesmerized by the beat claps in the beginning, the pipes on Lizzo, yet again, ushering in the chorus, the bridge that is all booty, booty, booty. I don't twerk. But if I did, it would only be to this song. It is definitely not clean, but the car windows are up right?
Gold Digger - Kanye West & Jamie Foxx
I miss this Kanye. His albums around 2005 were so dope. Do people even say dope anymore or is that so 2005? This song all about upgrading, references Coming to America. It doesn't get any better than that.
Best Line: "While y'all washin, watch him. He gon' make it to a Benz out of that Datsun. He got that ambition baby, look in his eyes. This week he moppin' floors, next week it's the fries."
Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
This song was written in 1967 and my children probably know all of the words. Forever a classic. It starts out so simple with some chimes or maybe even a Xylophone then that raspy "Listen Baby..." comes in. The epitome of happy music. Then there's a buildup and I'm pounding on the steering wheel and for a moment, I'm singing in the recording booth at Hitsville USA.
Hypnotize - The Notorious B.I.G.
I legit embarrass my kids when this song comes on and they are with me in the car. B.I.G.'s voice was like butter. So ridiculously smooth. It's one of those tunes that you can picture the video from the first "Take that, take that, take that. I made my son watch it and he gave a thoughtful analysis on this quintessential 90's video. "I don't know what mermaids and a random car chase have to do with being hypnotized, but okay."
Best Line: "Stink pink gators, My Detroit players."
